Surgical Treatment of Tuberculosis of the Hip



Abstract
This is presentation of fifty-eight cases of tuberculosis of the hip which were admitted at the Seoul National University Hospital from January 1957 to March 1962.
These patients occupied 29% of all patients of bone tuberculosis admitted during the same period. Thirty-seven of the patients were men and twenty-one were women.. The youngest age was four and the oldest was sixty-five, and thirty-seven patients were `below the age of ten. These patients were hospitalized for an average of twenty-three days. Surgery was performed in fortysix patients.
Several different types of surgery were done. Intra and extraarticular arthrodesis with internal fixation (Smith Perterson nail or, screw) was done in fourteen patients, Wilson John¢¥s fusion in nine, Henderson¢¥s in four, subtrochanteric osteotomy with or without¢¥ intra and extra-articular arthrodesis in two, Hibbs¢¥ in one. There was one fatality due to tuberculous meningitis four months after operation. Draining sinuses developed in eight patients postoperatively without great influence to fusion process.
The postoperative follow-up was possible in twenty four patients and the shortest period of follow-up was three months and the longest was five years. Fusion failed in three patients and in the remaining twenty patients, fusion was evident or considered to progress by roentgenographic examination.
